Heart Check

When it comes to our hearts, many of us are guarded. We have been let down by so many, so close to us. We believe that if we keep our hearts protected and secure that we will never have to experience the hurts and pain again.

If a physician could measure the emotional and spiritual condition of your heart right now, what would the test results conclude? Are you ready for the Great Physician, God, to do a heart check up on you? Or, are you content with your condition?

Prisoner of Unforgiveness

Though institutions are larger than life and you are surrounded by hundreds of people, a prison cell is a very small and lonely place. Left with only your thoughts to keep you company, the pain of unforgiveness can be... well, unforgiving!

I once read in an institutional magazine, "When I was free, I was in prison and when I came to prison I was set free!" I have always remembered that statement because it helped me see that I was imprisoned long before I had ever been placed behind bars.

If you are having a difficult time with forgiveness, if the very thought of it brings pain and loneliness into your heart, let me share my journey of the hardest choice of forgiveness I ever had to offer.

Are you ready to be set free from the prison of Unforgiveness?

Quick Fix Fail

We have all done it. At times it feels like the appropriate thing to do. Fast thinkers pride themselves on being "quick on the draw" when it comes to them. Yet, sooner than later, the leak is sprung and we are stuck with the crisis of the
Quick Fix
We live in a "duct tape" generation where we learn to handle our problems with the quick fix until later. When later finally becomes now, we are swamped with multiple duct taped circumstances all on the verge to blow. If we had taken the time to deal with the circumstances in the first place, we would not be facing the pressure that is about to bust the pipe. Yet, for some of us, duct tape is the only tool we have in our toolbox and so we learn to do the best with what we have. Are you ready to add a few tools to your toolbox?

Confession for the Soul

Confession, they say it cleanses the soul. If so, what is the soul, and just how clean is it at any given moment? We are only as sick as our secrets, for some of us that means we are on the death beds of our souls. Confession... getting honest with God, with ourselves, and with someone we trust. Are you ready to take this step?

Who's Driving?

Let's face it... life can be crazy! Life as a teenager... even crazier! So many decisions to make, so many appearances to keep up, so many people to please. Young life is frantic and exhausting. Yet, we are told to grab the bull by the horns, pull ourselves up by the boot straps, take the wheel and drive! We try our best to be in control. On the outside it may seem like we have it together, but inside we are a train wreck! Are you ready to move out of the driver seat yet? Are you ready to let Jesus take the wheel?

Trust Falling

Have you ever been Sky Diving? If you haven't (or wouldn't!), just imagine with me if you will. The plane ride up, nerves racing and heart pounding, as you ascend into the giant blue sky. Thousands of feet in the air, the door opens and it's your turn to jump. What is racing through your mind? The first step? The fall? The view? The landing? Maybe out of all the thoughts that could race through our mind, the most important should be...
"Who packed my parachute?"

More Than a Higher Power, A Higher Person!

Ideas, Love, Air, Faith...
What do these four things all have in common? The Unseen! Though we have seen the acts of things like ideas, love, air, and faith, to tangibly touch such things are beyond us. Though the acts can seem more real, they are only fleeting. The only true lasting things are the unseen force behind them... Spiritual Realities that bring hope. So ask yourself, when you think of your life are you hopeful?

It's a Trap!

No matter how smart we are, how athletic we are, or how popular we are, we can find ourselves falling for the same trap with the same bait over and over again!

Sure, we perfect our game, design new tactics, and convince ourselves that we have what it takes to win this time.

But before we can say "cheese".... SNAP! We're caught again. What gets us here?

Serious as a Heart Attack

Would you say you have a healthy heart? Could you run a mile? Two? Do you eat the right nutritious foods to keep your heart in good health? The condition of this vital organ to our physical living is critical. The healthier the heart, the longer the life.

So would you say you have a healthy heart emotionally? Spiritually? Do you find yourself eager or exhausted when it comes to time spent with God & others? Abundant in love or Angry? Refreshed or Resentful? Tender or Tense? Though our heart may be physically healthy, emotionally & spiritually... are we healthy or hurting? Maybe we suffer from a emotional/spiritual arrhythmia.

The Grace Card

Forgiveness for others = plausible
Forgiveness for yourself = possible
Forgiveness from Him = priceless
"The Grace Card: accepted by most, carried by few, and endorsed by ONE!"

What does it take to forgive someone or yourself after a serious hurt? Does it mean forgetting what was done? How about expecting an apology? Is forgiveness only given after amends have been made? Must you feel forgiveness in order for it to be genuine? Do the same rules apply for forgiving others as they do for forgiving yourself? How about Christ's forgiveness for you?

The innocent child who was abused and carries anger his entire life, becoming an abuser himself.

The daughter whose parents went through a nasty divorce and now she has to choose a parent to live with.

The young man caught in the tangled web of pornography who shamefully can't look at a woman without lusting after her

The young woman sexually abused who now feels completely and utterly worthless.

What do they all four of these hurt people have in common? They are locked in a prison that only has one key to freedom. Are you ready to turn your key?

Got Roots?

Ever wonder why problems return? We work so hard at getting rid of the drinking, drugging, anger, depression or what ever hurt or pain we have; only to find the problem spring back up and likely with a vengeance.

Since we have been digging, don't you think it's time we get to the root of the problem and quite focusing on product? If you're ready for a little gardening then you're ready for healing...

Only as Sick as Your Secrets

We all have them... skeleton keys, the only question is how many are hanging on your ring?

Secrets. The hurts, habits, and hang-ups we try to hide away so no one else will see them. Whether it's a pain you caused or a pain done unto you, locking hurt up in the closet of your heart is no way to deal with the chaos in your life. Healing can only come when you unlock those doors, open up, and pour out all that you have been holding inside.

Step 4: Hear & Speak: I agree to evaluate my life and confess to myself, to God, and to someone I trust.

Can you bring yourself to say it? Are you ready for others to hear it? If you are, you are ready for healing. It's time that we...

Life Review

 "Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me and know my anxious thoughts;
And see if there be any hurtful way in me,
And lead me in the everlasting way."
~ Psalm 139:23-24

Indeed a brave prayer for anyone with pain or hurt in their life. If we are used to covering our pain with band-aids, the longer we ignore them, we will find our wounds infected and swollen. Do you have a hurt you haven't dealt with yet? Does the inflammation of that wound cause pain whenever someone gets too close? It's time to cut the wound open again so that true healing can take place.

                    Are You Ready for That?

Did you know that...
  • an ostrich's eye is bigger than it's brain?
  • In England, the Speaker of the House isn't allowed to say anything?
  • The average person falls asleep in seven minutes?
  • The longest recorded flight of a chicken is thirteen seconds?
Truth changes lives, but not all truth is life changing. So, how do we find the truth with the power to change?

Looking For Independence?

"You do You, and I'm gonna do Me!" Mr./Ms. Independent. Most of us have been raised in an atmosphere of "look out for #1". Society has been teaching for years to be independent, to learn living on your own. After all, it's the American way. How is that working for you?

Let's ask ourselves, "What has living life my way gotten me?" If we are brave enough, bold enough, and honest enough to search out the answer to that question we may find a common answer. NOTHING! Nothing good anyway. If you are reading this blog, chances are it's because you have chosen to attempt living your way. Sure, you may have some good times, but at what cost? How much pain are you willing to take before you TURN from your independence and depend on SomeOne more powerful then you? When?

I could hardly comprehend it. Me? You don't understand what I have done. Who I have hurt. Where I have been. Everything I have been given is wasted. All of my bridges burned. No one is at home waiting for me to come back. No one cares. I have been disowned, forgotten. I am a stain upon my family name. The talk of the town. I could never be accepted back into loving arms. Never know the release from the burden I have caused. I am good for nothing. I am worthless! I am Hopeless!

Sound familiar?

Dimly lit, a life of pain is shrouded in darkness. Feeling alone and exhausted, what spark of hope left may be about to extinguish. Coming out of denial and into the knowledge of needing help, fight or flight kicks in. "Am I so far gone that I keep going because help feels so far out of reach?" Or, "do I fight with every fiber of my being to get through this?"

Only the insane would choose to keep going and not fight. But who really deals with hurt sanely? Not many of us. Think about this common definition of insanity... "Doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results". If your reading this blog, I bet this statement rings true to you (as it does to me).

So we fight! And we fight! And we fight... only to find more exhaustion and frustration, feeling as if our bulb grows dimmer. What's wrong?

First Step in Getting Help

Getting help even for adults, much less youth, isn't any easy task. A lot of barriers can get in the way before we come to grips with the idea of stepping out of our comfort zone. Fear, pride and anxiety are just a few of the obstacles we face. Yet the largest hurdle we have to get over is DENIAL. Let's face it, who really wants to admit that they are struggling? Who really wants to appear weak? Who really wants to open their suitcase of flaws in front of others? Not many! Not many want help either.

Realizing we have a problem and asking for help is the first sign of strength. This is the point where we are ready and willing to stop covering up and hiding. Tired of the endless struggles and feelings of absolute loneliness help is what we seek. We put on our game face and get ready to stand toe to toe, Mano e Mano with the "banana" in our lives.

Jeremiah 6:14 (NCV)
"They tried to heal my people’s serious injuries as if they were small wounds.
They said, ‘It’s all right, it’s all right.’ But really, it is not all right."

In other words... you can't heal a wound by saying it's not there. Knowing our banana isn't an apple, we can begin to peel away and see what lies beneath the surface. Getting to the root of our issues and facing them head on we will begin to see healing by simply admitting the problem exists. Yet it all boils down to "are you ready to call a banana a banana and not insist it's an apple. If your answer is yes, then you are ready to get help.

Living in denial is exhausting. Check out some of these easy to remember symptoms and see if you are experiencing them. If so, chances are that you are operating in denial.

Disregards our feelings
   Exhausts us
Never lets us grow
Isolates us from God
   Alienates us from people
Lengthens our pain

Are you ready for help? You are not alone. Life Hurts, God Heals is a safe place for you to gain the tools needed for life change. We are here to walk with you through this process if you are willing and wanting to walk with us. I leave you with this thought until next week; a family member told me many years ago... "You don't have to live this way anymore... if you don't want to.

Life Hurts, God Heals Semester 1

Life Hurts, God Heals
Most of today's youth begin struggling with identity and self-worth issues in the first year of Jr. High. From broken homes, overcrowded classrooms, peer pressure, workaholic parents, appearance issues, party scene, sports pressures, self mutilation, mental & physical abuse, and the list goes on of all the cadaverous circumstances that rob young lives.

With the growing pain of our adolescents, our future adult leaders are facing life with less tools and a stagnant, if at all, relationship with God. They are learning to "live in the now" instead of learning to live in faith, hope and love. With each failing relationship that withers by the roadside of life, God seems to just be another face in the crowd of the "Too busy, Too big, and Too distant". When left up to the devises of "The Now" the need of identity and self-worth give way into the acceptance of doing what feels good or what will get me noticed most. Discipleship is not an uncommon theme in today's youth, it's quite the opposite. Discipleship is active in all the wrong ways. We hope to change that!

Life Hurts, God Heals is a 8 step program of recovery providing life long tools for students with pain. Let's be clear, a 8 step program is not the answer. An 8 step program cannot save anyone. An 8 step program is just that... a program. Yet, what makes Life Hurts, God Heals so unique is throughout the entire program we are pointing students to God as the answer. Life Hurts, God Heals is highly relational; relation to God, Self and Others. Notice that the program "provides tools" that students can use and develop for life long recovery.

Maybe you are a student that needs help or a parent wanting help for your child. Either way, you can know this, the Life Hurts, God Heals IRC staff have been where you have been and have seen what God can do with someone who is wanting, willing, and ready. Each youth worker has a heart to help hurting kids NO MATTER WHAT they have, are, or will face. If you are ready, then now is the time.
