Life Hurts, God Heals Semester 8 2015!

Three Years! We have reached our 8th semester starting January 2015! It has been one heck of a ride as we laughed together, cried together, and been there for each other. We have seen students come and students go, but for those who have stayed the course we have seen healing, maturity, and relational restoration!

As we start this new year, do you know a middle or high school student dealing with difficult life issues and in need of a confidential support group? Let LHGH come alongside of your teenager today!

They say it's better to give than it is to receive, I'm not always certain about that. I truly believe there is equal blessing in both. Yet, we have slid to one side or the other; either we give and don't know how to receive or we receive and don't know how to give.

You can always tell a great gift the moment you get it because you want to share it with others. Those are the kinds of gifts that keep on giving. But when we put our gift on a shelf and don't share it, it only collects dust and is soon forgotten about. So, what will you do with the gift given to you by LHGH?

Are You Rooted?

When we don't forgive others it is like this picture. We let roots of bitterness grow and grow, deeper and deeper until they have squeezed every bit of love and joy out of us.
So why do let our roots strangle us until we can no longer breathe? How many roots of bitterness do you have growing in you right now? Do you feel free of roots because you have learned to forgive? Or do you feel so entangled with roots of bitterness that you don't know how to forgive?

Ready or Not, Here I Come!

Remember the days of playing Hide and Seek as a child? Remember how much fun it was? Do we ever stop playing Hide and Seek, is it a game we continue to play after childhood? Hide and seek is a game that we play as children that turns into actions and decisions we make when we get older.

  • "I have the fastest car! #Truth"
  • "Somewhere someone is looking for exactly what you have to offer. #Truth"
  • "Don't let someone's words blind you to their behavior. #Truth"
  • "Your body, Your rules. Don't let society mess you up." #Truth
Statements like these are the hashtags of our lives. But do they satisfy? Do they change? Can they transform? Or is there something better?

I grew up in a Christian home. I was taught to attend church every Sunday, to have good morals, pray before every meal, celebrated Jesus' birthday at Christmas, read the Bible, but something was missing for me. I only knew how to be Christian by doing all of those things, I didn't know that there was a real relationship I could have with Jesus.  . . . . . There was Action to be done!!!!

Light at the End of the Tunnel

How much light is at the end of your tunnel?
We spend so much time out of our days living in our pain. In high school  I was so consumed with trying to be better, trying to be enough and trying to be the best and somehow I never seem to be better or enough or the best. Life seemed hopeless. When we look at our lives in the future the tunnel ahead of us seems dark and claustrophobic. How much light do you see at the end of your tunnel?

Can't Force the Force

There are many things in life we would like control of! Let's face it... you would likely not be reading this article if you didn't in some way try and control your life.

Yet, the more we try to have the power to control the more we realize just how lacking we really are. Soon our utter powerlessness to control our circumstances in life become so overwhelming.

Paul David Tripp says this; "The fact that I am not in control should not make me think that my world is out of control."

So, Are you ready to give up what little power you believe you have for the Power that is in control no matter how little you believe?

"Denial is not just a river in Egypt and those who sail it are the captains of their own helm."
~George L.

A life of denial is more dangerous than the things we actually struggle with. If admitting is the first step of recovery than denial is the first stage of our hurts, habits, and hang-ups. Think of denial like cancer, if you catch it early it can be treated and prevented from returning, but if not, detriment is sure to ensue. So, why is denial so dangerous and how does it sneak up on us before we see it for what it is?

Only God Can Judge Me

Only God can judge me!
How many times do we hear this said? How many times have we said this ourselves? What are we “supposedly” judging? Is God our only judge? What is our responsibilities within this statement? Is it even right to say it?

This Monday (August 18, 2014) at 5:30pm at Life Hurts, God Heals (LHGH), we will be discussing The Heart. The heart is a subject that I’m very passionate about. I would like to start out by saying that I’m a sinner just like everyone else.

Maybe it’s time to rethink the sayings that we use? Maybe it’s time to rethink “how” we use the sayings we use?

Most of us have heard it said...
"Unforgivenness, is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die."
So, why is unforgiveness so toxic in our lives? If we had to gauge our toxicity level right now from 1 to 10, how toxic are we?

I don't know about you, but I am tired of things that are destroying me, and unforgiveness is one of them! Aren't you ready to let go of what they have done to you? Aren't you ready to seek forgiveness for what you've done????

The Next Exit

It's amazing how we have been fooled into thinking it's okay to do things our way. The more we travel that very common road, the more we experience hurt, pain, and sorrow. We say we don't want to feel those things any longer, but refuse to get off the "My Way Highway".

Aren't you tired of the pain yet? Aren't you frustrated that things aren't changing for you the way you'd like? Isn't it time to try a different route? Stop clinging to the path you have always taken and have come to know. It's time to embark on an uncharted adventure! Will you join us?

Truth Hurts Sometimes

Let's face it... the truth hurts sometimes and in recovery it hurts more times than not! Isn't that why we are so steeped in denial? I mean, who likes pain anyway?

The tough part with emotional, mental and spiritual pain is that it is so easy to hide... especially from ourselves. That's why truth and honesty are critical for life recovery.

Are you ready for the hard truth? Are you ready to face it no matter how ugly or painful? If so, you are ready to continue reading...

Acting or Action?

There is a saying I grew up with you have probably heard... "Don't talk about it, be about it!" It was a saying that pushed people beyond the simplicity of speech and into the  ambitiousness of action.

So how come so many fail to make the transition? Why is it our words speak so much louder than our actions and what does that say about our recover?

The Deceleration of Independence
We are quickly approaching the 4th of July, the day we celebrate our Independence as a people and as a nation. The freedoms we celebrate are all linked to this sacred document of national history. This document represents men of great stature and character gathered together to take a stand against tyranny.

When it comes to the documents of our lives does our independence from the tyranny of our hurts, habits, and hang-ups make us independent people?

The Matrix of Recovery

If we have admitted that we are powerless on our own and that we need help, where do we find that help? Do we try really hard to "do better"? Do we hide how we truly feel and pretend everything is "F.I.N.E."? Do we fake it until we make it?

In order to recover we must peel back the reality of our lives and search for the Player behind the scenes, the One that has the power to reconnect our broken circuits and reprogram our lives. Are you ready to enter the Matrix of Recovery?

The Backpack of Pain

Broken homes, addicted parents, poverty living, wealthy living, depression, abuse, cutting, anger, substance abuse, bullying and so much more become heavy bricks in what I like to call "The Backpack of Pain". With each new hurt, habit, or hang-up our packs become heavier and more visible. The weight and strain of carrying it becomes exhausting! And as we look around we are able to notice how many of our friends have the same pack on.

Why is it that many of us carry such heavy loads at such early ages? Most of what we carry in our adolescent years shapes the very structure of our adulthood. So, don't you want to lighten your load?

Have a Pet Gorilla

We have heard it before... "Denial is not a river in Egypt", but what if it's an angry albino gorilla in your living room?

The only difference between those who need recovery from a hurt, habit, or hang up and those who want recovery is that those who want it are ready to admit they have a problem that is causing significant damage from rampage behaviors. For them, the gorilla in the room can no longer be ignored or rationalized away.

Again & Again

Just about all of us have been told by someone that we are loved. If you're reading this blog there is a good chance that person's love may be wearing thin after all of our failures. In recovery, they say that most don't seek help until all of the bridges are burned and there is no where left to turn. So, how can God continue to love us beyond all of our failures? All of the hurt that was caused us? All of the hurt that we caused? How can God's love never fail?

It's That Time Again

It's like the dreaded report card, meeting with guidance counselor, or conversation with mom or dad that you just can't get around. It's that time when the mirror of truth must be held up and we take a good hard look at the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Self examination. Do you do it? Is it a regular part of your spiritual routine? Is it something you procrastinate about or jump in with booth feet? There are lots of different approaches and blockades to a Life Review, so have you reviewed your review process lately?

Time to Get Honest

It's here, it's time and there is no other way around other than complete denial... and that's a step in the wrong direction. Are you ready? Have you believed? Do you have someone you can trust? Then it's time to line up the good and the bad and take an honest look at the truth of who we were, who we are, and who God wants us to be. Are you ready for Honesty?

New Direction

When it comes to recovery, some tough choices have to be made. It doesn't matter what you are dealing with, be it substance abuse, anger, depression, cutting, hate, or any other form of dysfunction. There comes a point where you have to ask yourself "Is the pain to stay the same greater then the pain to change?" Are you ready to do what it takes to experience true freedom and healing from life's hurts?

Expect Change

"Doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result." ~Insanity

There are things in our lives that we work hard at. When we put all we have into our studies, our exercises, or our athleticism we expect to get better. After all, "No pain, No gain" right? So why should our recovery be any different? Are you tired of the same old results because you just keep doing the same old thing? Are you ready for change and to expect change?

Hello My Name Is...

We all have them, you know... the things you wish you hadn't done, the people you wish you hadn't hurt, the things you wish you would have tried or accomplished. Regrets.

Do you find yourself constantly entertaining your regrets over and over like a video tape on a loop in your brain? Do you find that your stress levels are up, your emotional levels are down, and your thought life is all round? How exhausted do you feel? Want to feel better? Think  better? Live better? Here's how...

Winter Semester 2014

Let’s face it, sometimes LIFE HURTS and we get caught up in habits that are hard to break. If you are dealing with pain (who isn’t?) including: addictions, eating disorders, abuse, pornography, drinking, cutting, etc., then Life Hurts God Heals is for you. Hundreds of students have gone through this and many lives were changed.

Do you know a teenager that needs a support group that will encourage them, lead them, and instruct them through the waves of life that seem to batter us? Life Hurts, God Heals can be that additional support in your students life!

What is Life Hurts God Heals?
Life Hurts God Heals (LHGH) is specifically for students, middle school thru college, who have experienced pain or addiction including: drinking, cutting, pornography, eating disorders, troubled family dynamics, etc. Hosted by Rebirth Ministry and One Life Students. We are averaging 14 students on any given night, 3 of which have taken on internships as student leaders.

If you are familiar with 12-step programs (i.e., Alcohol Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous, etc) then you understand the basic structure for Life Hurts God Heals. However, Life Hurts God Heals is an 8-step group targeted specifically for students in middle school through college age, and is based on the beatitudes from the Bible. This curriculum provides lifelong tools for students dealing with unresolved hurt and pain. It was written by John Baker, Doug Fields and Megan Hutchinson as a result of seeing the unmet pain of students in their youth ministry at Saddleback Church.
