Principle # 4

#4 Hear and Speak

Openly examine and confess my faults to myself, to God and to someone I trust.

In step four we deal with Truth, a Life Review, and Confess. We spend three weeks on step four because it is such a big step. When we evaluate our lives the truth we discover an change the way we live. Truth changes lives, yet not all truth is life changing... for example;

Did you know that the longest recorded flight of a chicken is 13 seconds?

As true as that is, it doesn't do much to change our lives. How much is in your life that is not life changing? Where we get our truth from will determine how effectively our lives change. So unless you are a chicken catcher, I am going to assume that the above "truth" is pretty much useless.

For the Life Review we will ask God to "Search me, oh God, and know my heart; test my thought. Point out anything you find in me that makes you sad, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. (Psalm 139:23-24)

Confession is simply letting our hurts out. Bottom line, if you want to be successful and live a life worth living then we have to let go of our resentments, our hurts, our sins, past failures, and seek God. Confession is absolutely necessary for us to connect with God and on another. We are only as sick as our secrets, so if we avoid confessing our struggles then they become like a cancer spreading to all we say, do and think.
